Blogorail - Undiscovered Disney

Welcome to those of you joining us from Pursuing the Magic and those of you just hopping aboard.  We are the final stop on our Magical Blogorail.

On this month's Blogorail Blue loop we're sharing our Undiscovered Disney - lesser-known things, Disney Parks off the beaten path if you will.  Disney World is such a big place, and there's so much to experience that it's simply impossible to do it all, at least in one visit.

One of our favorite experiences at Disney World takes place outside of the parks.  It's something we weren't unfortunately able to do on our last few visits because of our resort choice.  But it's something we missed very much and actually helped sway us on our resort choice for our next Disney World visit.  Our favorite Undiscovered Disney experience is the Sassagoula River Cruise at Disney's Port Orleans resort!

The Sassagoula River links Disney's Port Orleans Resort, both Riverside and French Quarter, to Downtown Disney.  The Sassagoula River Cruise is a ferry boat service which provides transportation up and down the river to and from Downtown Disney.  The boat trip takes about 15 minutes and is very scenic and relaxing.

Because we stayed at Port Orleans French Quarter for our first visits to Disney World, we developed an appreciation for Downtown Disney from our trips there on the Sassagoula River Cruise.  A long bus ride to or from DTD simply doesn't provide the experience that a relaxing boat ride does.  Cruising down the river for an afternoon of shopping or an evening meal is a nice change of pace from the busy atmosphere of the parks.

During your trip down the river you'll pass by Disney's Lake Buena Vista golf course and the Saratoga Springs resort, including the Saratoga treehouse buildings.  Ferry boats run every 10-20 minutes depending on the time of day.  And the trip is even more beautiful at night, with the bright lights of Downtown Disney's Westside reflecting in the water of Village Lake.  In our opinion if Downtown Disney was as conveniently accessible to everyone as it is to Port Orleans guests it would be a much more popular component of Disney World.

The boat captains of the river boats are always an entertaining bunch as well.  They have plenty of facts and history lessons about Disney World to share.  Just take any rumours that they provide you with a grain of salt - boat captains have a notorious reputation on the Disney message boards for providing questionable "insider information" about upcoming events at WDW!

So if you haven't stayed at Port Orleans we highly recommend it for the Sassagoula River Cruise. Even if you're not staying there a trip to or from Downtown Disney down the river is worth a side trip!  The Sassagoula River Cruise is our favorite Undiscovered Disney secret.
